TUTORS FOR ALL EXPLAINEDTUTORS FOR ALL IS:Inspired by best practices at the award-winning MATCH school;Proven effective in building literacy and numeracy skills;Affordable to schools and districts;Transformative for schools, students, and their tutors.WHAT ARE TUTORIALS?Tutorials are one-on-one (or one-on-two) instruction sessions led by work-study college students and volunteers. They are:Individually planned;Scheduled and Mandatory;Skills-based (for the most part, math and reading);Goal and assessment driven (created by analysis of testing data (skills testing, MCAS, proficiencies));A cost-effective strategy for bridging the achievement gap. Tutorials are not:extra helpafter schooloptional/drop-injust for struggling kidsWhat kind of tutorials has Tutors for All successfully run?1. Math skills: students in tutorial went from 29% to 67% on test of basic skills (students not in tutorial went from 56% to 72%). Reading skills: student in tutorial made twice the reading growth of students not in tutorial (1.25 vs. .625 of a year).Fall 2007 skills tutorials. Math skills: students in tutorial increased 22 points in (100 point) test of basic skills (students not in tutorial increased by 9 points).Reading skills: students in three month tutorial had double reading growth of students not in tutorial (1.4 vs. .7 of a year).MCAS ResultsIn 2007 school year, 100% of CoaH students passed the exam (first time ever) and 75% of students scoring proficient or advanced in ELA and math (45% reaching proficient and advanced in best pre-tutorial year).Codman Academy Charter Public SchoolFall 2008 Skills TutorialsMath skills: students in tutorial had almost four times the improvement of students not in tutorial in test of basic skills.Reading skills: students in tutorial had reading growth a year greater than students not in tutorial.MCAS Results07-08 results have 73% of students scoring proficient or advanced on math MCAS (45% reaching this level in best pre-tutorial year).08-09 preliminary results have 87% of students scoring proficient or advanced on ELA (60% reaching this level in previous three years), 79% of students scoring proficient or advanced on math.Smith Leadership Academy Charter Public SchoolSkills tutorialsFall 2008 math skills tutorial programs brought average student scores on an exam of basic skills from 42% (47% median) to 79% (79% median).Spring 2009 skills tutorial programs brought student average scores on an exam of basic skills from 54% (median 55%) to 73% (median 90%).Preliminary MCAS results have 45% of students scoring proficient and advanced (as compared to 29% in best tutorial year).WHAT DOES IT COSTAround $20 per student per hour of tutoring (depends upon size of program and schools proximity to college campuses).
