Tutors for All, Codman Academy 1st in state in MCAS student growth

Malden, MA September 21, 2011 – Tutors for All partner Codman Academy Charter Public School has posted the highest combined median student growth profile (MSGP) of any district in the state. Codman’s combined MGSP of 160 (82 math, 78 ELA) beat out Pioneer Charter School of Science (83, 75) and Excel Academy (83, 73) for the top spot. “We are so proud of students performance and appreciate the critical role Tutors for All has and continues to play to support teaching in the classroom,” said Codman Executive Director Meg Campbell.

Student Growth Percentile (SGP) represents an individual student’s growth relative to his/her academic peers. Median Student Growth Percentile (MGSP) represents the growth of a particular cohort, and as such is frequently used to measure the value added to a given group of students by their educators. An MGSP of 70 or higher places a school in the top 5% of schools statewide. An MGSP of 80 or higher places a school in the top 1%. Tutors for All math tutorial programs in two district and one charter school (Maurice Tobin, Dever/McCormack, Conservatory Lab Charter School) also had cohort MGSPs of 70 or above.

Tutors for All’s unique approach to academic support, recruiting and training hundreds of community-service college students to work one-on-one with entire cohorts of students in public Boston schools, has driven school improvement in ten different schools since its first program in 2005. This year, we are pleased to welcome as partners two new public Boston schools and our first community organization, Massachusetts General Hospitals Center for Community Health Improvement.
